Mennad, whose real name is Mohamed Ould Slimane, was born on November 11, 1954 in Kabylie. He studied law at the Faculty of Algiers. He also studied music at the conservatory of Algiers. In France, he studied Berber at INALCO where he earned a degree in Berber language and civilization.
A singer and a composer, he is a privileged witness of the wave that has traveled the 70s and 80s and in which he participated with another great Berber singer, Idir.
It was first in a group that Mennad sang: Imnayen ("Horsemen"). This group produced a single with two titles in Algiers in the 70s. He sang "Imucagh" ("The Tuaregs") and "Tizimert-tagrurt" ("The Lamb"). Like most bands, Imnayen breaks up and Mennad goes solo.
In 1980, he released his first LP "Amedyaz Bumendayer" with 10 songs. He paints an intimate portrait of the Kabyle society that he describes in a masterly way. Five of the 10 poems are by Amar Mezdad, a Kabyle writer and doctor, one of Hadjira Oubachir, poet, actress, and host of Channel II. The other texts are from Mennad.
In 1983, he released his second LP "Cebhent Tira" with 12 songs. Six were written by Amar Mezdad and one by Hadjira Oubachir. The other texts are from Mennad.
