Formed in 2020 after the previous project "Xiyu" (2019-2020) was put on indefinite hiatus, Kiasu is a transgender, experimental solo artist from Minnesota often combining beat heavy elements of post and electro-industrial, glitch, synthpunk, ambient techno, flashcore, power noise and field recordings to create unique, off-kilter, ominous soundscapes. Dabbling in both cryptic and intensely personal lyricism laden with regret, strife, anger and longing, each album tends to reflect a period of turmoil and uncertainty. The harsh, haunting soundscapes are underpinned by androgynous vocals bobbing and weaving between dream pop inspired croons and visceral, unsettling shrieks.
Ever enigmatic and constantly floating under the radar, no live footage seems to exist and not much can be found on influences but fans seem to draw a line to the work of Xiu Xiu, Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails and Black Dresses. Other proposed influences include Radiohead, Merzbow, Autechre, Deftones and Crystal Castles.
As of 2025 Kiasu has released six full length albums, four singles and one extended play with a new single and another album (TBA) reportedly along the way.
