Der Wolf, born Jens Albert (* September 27, 1973, in Lüdinghausen), is a German rapper and DJ.
He achieved significant chart success in the late 1990s with the singles "Gibt’s doch gar nicht" and "Oh Shit – Frau Schmidt". His subsequent album "Der Wolf – Das Album" also performed well, charting in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In later years, he released additional albums and collaborated with artists such as US rapper Big Daddy Kane and German singer-songwriter Cosmo Klein. He is also active as a DJ in various musical projects and is a co-founder of the record label Bounty Records.
Der Wolf began his musical career as a home-scratch DJ with a focus on hip-hop and funk. In 1994, he had his first resident DJ job at the “Zeche” in Bochum. From 1995 onward, he performed in various clubs in the Ruhr area, including Drum ’n’ Bass parties with DMC Quincy, with whom he continues to collaborate and produce music.
His debut album "Das Album" (1997) reached number 16 on the German album charts. His music is characterized by sampled funk or soul beats paired with fast rap lyrics. The singles "Gibt’s doch gar nicht" (D 25) and "Oh Shit – Frau Schmidt" (D 18) were particularly successful; Sasha contributed as a background vocalist on the former. The song "Sei dein eigener Held" from the album was featured again in 2002 on the soundtrack of the US film "Die Regeln des Spiels".
His follow-up album "Musik aus (M)Einem Jahrzehnt" (1998) did not match the success of his debut but included reworked older tracks such as "Wirf Die Waffe Weg '98". During this period, he developed an interest in Big Beat as well as funky and disco-house music. His 2000 album "Was soll ich sagen" achieved only moderate success, after which he focused more on guest rapping and DJ sets. As a DJ, he is part of the group "The Killergroove Formula," which achieved multiple Top-40 hits in international DJ charts and released one LP and six singles. Since 2009, he has also been a member of the Dortmund-based funk-rock band "Higher BuBu".
In 2006, he contributed to the charity album "Wir Sind Borussia!" with the tracks "Shaalaalala Borussia" (with Ede Whiteman & ND) and "Ein Stern" (with Ede Whiteman). A planned comeback album "Wolf GTI" was announced for 2007 but was repeatedly delayed and ultimately never released. Since 2011, Der Wolf has published Borussia Dortmund match analyses on YouTube and schwatzgelb.de, accompanied by rap lyrics.
After clarifying the rights to "Wolf GTI," he founded the label Bounty Records in 2015 and released the video for the new song "Der Phrasensmasher" on YouTube. A single EP titled "Wolf GTI" followed, and on July 29, 2016, his fourth album "Turbo Funk" was released, featuring new tracks as well as an updated version of the hit "Gibt’s doch gar nicht 2k16" with satirical, modernized lyrics. In 2018, he released the single EP "Ne, is klar" with Sista Silk.
In 2019, he featured on the song "Zu Komplex" by the Dortmund punk rock band "Die Lieben Löwen" and appeared in the music video.
Der Wolf describes his DJ style as "Smartcore-Funk" or "Urban-Beats," a blend of hip-hop, reggae/ragga, R’n’B, Big Beat, breakbeats, nu-funk, drum ’n’ bass, 1970s funk, and soul. His DJ sets also include disco classics from the 1970s to 2000s as well as current chart hits. On the streaming platform Twitch, he operates the channel "DerWolfTV," where he regularly hosts live hip-hop streams featuring other DJs and local freestyle MCs.
