Warthane was started in 2004 by Sean Gouws and operate from Alberton, South Africa. Sean was heavily influenced by thrash bands such as Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction, and he brought these influences to the band. The band started with a very strong sense of where they would be heading. Warthane recorded their first album "Black Wings of Sorrow" in September 2006. Until this time Sean was the only band member contributing to the music and lyric writing for the band. His strong thrash influences and background is very evident in Warthane’s music until this time.
Soon after this recording, Nazar Berezovsky, Gavin Hockly and Dieter Engel joined Warthane on guitar, drums and bass respectively, bringing with them a strong black and death metal influence and joined in the music writing. Warthane’s sound can now be described as fast progressive thrash metal, laced with melodic death and black metal. Their sound is very unique in South Africa and that, combined with the band members' larger than life stage personalities and energy, have fans and supporters headbanging and moshing every time they take to the stage.
Warthane thrive on excellence and continuously strive to better themselves, their music and their live performances. One of South Africa's hardest gigging metal bands, Warthane have gigged extensively throughout South Africa during 2006 and 2007 and will continue to do so. Warthane have played most of the larger metal festivals in South Africa such as Mother Fudd (x3), the Summoning (x2), Grimfest (x2), From the Dark Metal Fest (x2), Sun to Moon (x2) and also non metal festivals such as Seasons Wither(x2), Bellsfest, the Youth Festival, Witchfest etc. The quality of Warthane’s music and their live performances has turned many a metal supporter into Warthane fans. This has resulted in the Warthane fan base doubling in size a few times over the past year.
Warthane have just released their second recording, the EP "Day 13" and so far have received very positive feedback on it.
