John Butt is a prominent keyboard player (harpsichord and organ) and conductor, who has focused largely on music of the Baroque period. He is also a pedagogue and widely considered an authority on the music of J.S. Bach and its performance, as well as on German Baroque music in general. As director of the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus 1991-1997, and the Philharmonia Baroque Chorale, he has participated in many concerts and recordings with the Philharmonia Baroque orchestra and its director, Nicholas McGegan. He has been guest conductor and a regular soloist for the Philharmonia Baroque orchestra. During the late 1990's his concert schedule in England and USA increased, and he has featured as a soloist or guest conductor with many orchestras, institutions and festivals. In 1996 he directed a newly discovered Scarlatti opera at the Berkeley Festival. In 1997 he gave memorable readings of Händel Organ Concertos with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. In 1998 he performed Händel organ concertos with St Paul's Chamber Orchestra of Minnesota, and in 1999 appeared at the Carmel Bach Festival. He is co-artistic director of Dunedin Consort.
