Jack Ruby

Jack Ruby (born Lawrence Lindo) was an important reggae producer in the mid-'70s, noted for his use of horn arrangements in particular. His most outstanding credit is Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey album, and he also worked with Big Youth, the Heptones, the Gaylads, and Justin Hinds, among numerous other acts. Suffering from ill health, he became less prolific in the 1980s, and died in 1989. A generous sampling of his work is available on the Heartbeat compilation Jack Ruby Presents the Black Foundation.Of course, two of Burning Spear's most famous tunes, "Marcus Garvey" and "Slavery Days," are included, but just as good are The Black Survivors' "Come Away Jah Jah Children" and "Every Knee Shall Bow" -- both excellent examples of roots harmony -- along with The Eagles' "Warn the Nation," and "Decent Citizen" by the folksy Leonard Dillon/Toots Hibbert-ish Prince and The Seraphim.
