Detailierte Künstler Informationen: Defunkt

Defunkt ist eine US-amerikanische Punk-Funk-Jazz-Band um den Posaunisten Joseph Bowie (Bruder des Jazz-Trompeters Lester Bowie).. Ende der siebziger Jahre entstand Defunkt aus ehemaligen Mitstreitern von James Chance. Bei den ersten Auftritten im New Yorker Squat Theatre noch angekündigt als Joe Bowie and the Defunked oder The Defunked besteht die Band bis in die Gegenwart (es gibt auch eine Bigband Variante). Noch heute werden in dieser Band die Errungenschaften des Free Jazz mit Funk kombiniert und Discoklischees und starre Jazzschablonen tanzbar dekonstruiert. Seit 22 Jahren als Bassistin dabei ist Kim Clarke. Für einige Zeit gehörte auch Vernon Reid, der Gitarrist von Living Colour, zu Bowies Ensemble.
