THURMITE began recording music in 1999 in State College, Pennsylvania. Early on, their sound was characterized by harsh noise, feedback, and electronic experimentation.

The group's first album, Calcium Release, was released in 1999. While the album included a few "songs," it was mostly a forum for noise-based sonic journeys that challenge even the most dedicated listeners. Nestled inside some of the more abstract songs such as "From Across Field19" and "Six Pops" are a few slightly more melodic moments, but as a whole the album is not for the faint of heart.

In 2000, thurmite released their sophomore effort, The Celebrated Mr. Mint.


THURMITE's sound is summed up by their third album's title, "Melody Beat Noise." Somewhere in the junction of those three elements, thurmite has created the ultimate modern music, a freeform combination of songcraft, avant garde noise, and lyrics plumbed from a totally personal sense of humor and worldview.
