Thombie

Thombie is the musical duo of Rick Dillwood and Sean Duncan (also the frontman of Kid Mud), childhood friends who combine singer songwriter tunes with electronic textures and over twenty years of shared memories. Originally from Oakdale, CA, the two now live almost 3,000 miles apart (Dillwood in Greensboro, NC and Duncan in Modesto, CA), but have been sharing demo recordings and collaborating during holiday visits for the past three years.

Thombie’s debut EP, Get Out Of My Life, a six song collection from New and Used Records, is a time capsule of the friends’/collaborators’ lives over the past three years. The first single, “Private Jet To Vegas” is a great introduction—Dillwood and Duncan share lead vocal responsibilities and the refrain, “It hasn’t changed, it always seems to stay the same,” nicely summarizes their life-long friendship.

In high school, the two played together in several bands, but it was Duncan who pursued music more aggressively, touring with Fiver for over five years before eventually focusing on solo material under the moniker, Kid Mud (now a five-piece band). Dillwood spent time teaching high school English, but eventually made his way to North Carolina where he is completing an MFA in Video and Film Production.

During a fateful visit in 2007, Duncan gave Dillwood a tour of the first incarnation of Two Channel Studio (an iMac, an interface, and a Shure SM57) and suggested they record. Six hours later, two Dillwood-penned originals had been transformed into fully developed songs with the help of Duncan’s burgeoning ear for production and multi-instrumental skills.

Get Out Of My Life is a descendant of those early recordings and a true collaboration, with both Dillwood and Duncan writing, singing, and playing on the tracks. The six songs are steeped in a vague nostalgia and are a perfect accompaniment to a sunny day’s drive with the windows down: breezy and warm with choral refrains that beg you to sing along.
