There are several bands with the name Sinner.

1. Sinner is a German heavy metal band formed in 1982 by vocalist and bassist Mat Sinner, who later also became a member of Primal Fear. The band is associated with the German heavy, speed and power metal scene. Their most recent album, "Brotherhood", was released on 15 July 2022.

Based in Stuttgart, Sinner released their debut album, "Wild'n'Evil", in 1982. This and the following albums "Fast Decision" and "Danger Zone" were comparatively raw in style and differed from the more melodic heavy metal sound the band later developed. The group underwent numerous line-up changes during this period, including the departure of drummer Edgar Patrik, who later joined Bonfire. Guitarist Herman Frank of Accept joined the band and appeared on the 1985 album "Touch of Sin". Frank left before the release of 1986's "Comin' Out Fighting" and was replaced by Mathias Dieth, who later played with U.D.O.

In 1987, Sinner released "Dangerous Charm", which showed a more melodic direction than earlier work. Following this release, the band lost its recording contract, took a hiatus and did not release further material for approximately five years.

In 1990, Mat Sinner released a solo album titled "Back to the Bullet" with a new backing band. Three members of that project later reformed Sinner, leading to the release of "No More Alibis" in 1992. This album marked a heavier direction for the band compared to their earlier material. It was followed by "Respect" in 1994 and "Bottom Line" in 1995, the latter of which remained in the Japanese national album chart for five weeks. During this period, the band toured as a support act for groups including Mr. Big and Savatage, undertook headlining tours in Germany, and released a live album.

The band continued with "Judgement Day" in 1997 and "The Nature of Evil" in 1998. During this period, they toured Europe as a support act for Deep Purple. "The Nature of Evil" reached number 63 on the German albums chart and was the band's highest-charting release at that time. In 1998, Mat Sinner and guitarist Tom Naumann, who had been involved since the band's reformation in 1992, formed Primal Fear with vocalist Ralf Scheepers. Sinner has continued to be active in both bands.

In 2000, the band underwent further line-up changes, including the departure of Tom Naumann. Former Helloween and Gamma Ray drummer Uli Kusch played on "The End of Sanctuary". In 2003, the line-up associated with the 1995–1999 period reunited and released "There Will Be Execution" on 20 January 2003, after which the band was inactive for several years.

In 2007, Sinner returned with "Mask of Sanity", which included the singles "Diary of Evil" and "Black", as well as a cover version of Thin Lizzy's "Baby Please Don't Go".

Sinner's early album sales are estimated to have been relatively modest, with the first three releases reportedly selling fewer than 150,000 copies combined. The 1990s albums "Respect" and "Bottom Line" are reported to have sold fewer than 200,000 copies together. "The Nature of Evil" sold over 100,000 copies and was supported by online promotion, particularly through German music websites. Compilation releases during this period included "Emerald Collection" and "The Second Decade", the latter combining selected tracks from previous albums, live recordings and previously unreleased material.

"The End of Sanctuary" and "There Will Be Execution" are among the band's 21st-century releases to have entered the German albums chart. After the album "Tequila Suicide", the band toured in Europe, Japan and Australia. "Santa Muerte" was released on 13 September 2019 via AFM Records and included the single "Fiesta Y Copas", featuring Ronnie Romero of Rainbow. Sinner has released seventeen studio albums and is reported to have sold over one million records worldwide.
