Run 229 were a Welsh mod revival band that existed between 1979 and 1982. Its main members were Mark Allen on lead vocals, and Steve Eton Jones on lead guitar, formerly of rock band Hybrid, and drummer Ray Bibby, rhythm guitarist and violin player John Tallon Jones and bassist Nick Carr. They released one single in 1980, the anthemic Soho backed with Dance and In this Day and Age.
The band were formed in Shotton by Ray Bibby in the Central Hotel, with an ambition of making a band similar to the Who.
There is a rumour that apparently Run 229 was named after their tour van, however this is not the case. The license plate had to be found within North Wales after a piss-up, however this is desputed as Steve Eton Jones reportedly had a van with the plate RUN 229. The band were also famously known for touring with every mod revival band except Secret Affair.
The band split up in 1982 after many near misses, including a signing to Pye subsidiary Baal Records and their manager going on to be interested in Bad Manners. Bassist Nick Carr would disappear in the same year.
They also made a now-lost appearance on Granada TV in 1979, which according to Steve Eton Jones, he had to call off sick at work to perform at the show, and his boss had no clue up until the appearance on Granada
They are now a cult band thanks to their lone single's label design and their single Soho.
