Quantum Cellar

Background :

Quantum Cellar is a Belgian rock band from the region of Namur, Capital of the french-speaking part of Belgium. The members are :

Jérémy Denison (guitars) his older brother Johan Denison (bass & keyboards) Simon Tonon (guitars) and Cederik Leeuwe (e-drums & sampling). According to their personnal sites and blogs, Cederik Leeuwe and Johan Denison are most responsible for the visual artworks of the band, Cederik being an experimental photographer and Johan a drawer/illustrator.

On their Myspace page, they describe their band as "the most amateurish would-be-prog-rock band in the universe" while on their Jamendo account they describe themselves as an Instrumental rock band ranging from progressive to post rock while exploring psychedelic, metal, ambient and folk sounds.

Creative Commons Artists and liberal views :

All Quantum Cellar songs are available under creative commons license (non derivative, non commercial). The band is self-sufficient, taking care of the recording, mixing, mastering, and promotion themselves. Jérémy Denison is credited as the member responsible for mixing and mastering the works.

On his french-speaking blog, Cederik Leeuwe has made the band's liberal view of music creating clear. Stating in this post : "We believe that music (or any artistic creation) is made to be freely accessible[...] artist relying on copyright to ensure royalties during 50 years are nothing but public amusers" Further in the post, he questions copyright and suggest that its length of application (if copyright was to remain in the future) should be reduced to 5 years instead of 50 before going into public domain. This post was a mood note about the French law HADOPI, law which intends to control and punish illegal internet download, which they fear would gravely endanger freedom on the internet.

In their 2009 EP We've Got Plenty Of Time Quantum Cellar have credited the use of files from the Freesound project. Stating : "In order to create their New EP's particular ambience, Quantum Cellar made an extensive use of the freesound project's free sampling. As Creative Common artists, QC members would like to thank the following users for their wonderful sounds !"

The music :

The music is purely instrumental and album-oriented. Often mixing genres by adding lengthy ambient parts and samples to the albums.
