Pyogenesis

Pyogenesis is a German band from Stuttgart, formed in 1991. The band has undergone several stylistic changes over the course of its career, evolving from early death metal and doom metal to gothic metal, and later incorporating alternative rock, alternative metal, and pop-punk elements before returning to a heavier sound in later years. The band has been described as an early contributor to the development of gothic metal.

Pyogenesis emerged from the local band Immortal Hate and was founded by vocalist and guitarist Flo V. Schwarz in 1991. The members met at the Rockfabrik club near Stuttgart, which served as a hub for the regional rock and metal scene. The band initially operated within the underground, releasing early material such as the single "Rise of the Unholy" and "Sacrificious Profanity" in limited quantities through international independent labels.

In 1992, the band recorded and released the mini album "Ignis Creatio" through Osmose Productions. The release combined elements of extreme metal with both clean and guttural vocals. In 1993, Pyogenesis recorded "Sweet X-Rated Nothings" and subsequently signed with Nuclear Blast. The first release under the label was the EP "Waves of Erotasia" in 1994, followed by the full-length version of "Sweet X-Rated Nothings" later that year. During this period, the band toured Europe, including performances with "Anathema", and gained broader recognition through live appearances and media coverage.

In 1995, the band released "Twinaleblood", which expanded their use of melodic structures and clean vocals. The album received positive reviews and was supported by extensive touring and music video airplay. Around this time, the band also contributed the track "Son of Fate" to the compilation "Death Is Just the Beginning…".

The 1997 album "Unpop" marked a stylistic shift towards alternative rock influences. It was preceded by the EP "Love Nation Sugarhead", whose title track received notable media attention, including remixes for the international market. The band supported the release with touring and festival appearances across Europe.

In 1998, Pyogenesis released "Mono ... or Will It Ever Be the Way It Used to Be", produced by Siggi Bemm. The album continued the band’s alternative-oriented direction and was well received by the music press. During this period, lineup changes occurred as members Tim Eiermann and Wolfgang Maier departed.

Between 1999 and 2002, the band toured extensively throughout Europe. In 2000, they released "P ... or Different Songs in Different Sounds", a remix and re-recording project. In 2002, Pyogenesis released the EP "I Feel Sexy" and the album "She Makes Me Wish I Had a Gun" via Hamburg Records, a label founded by Flo V. Schwarz. The album was commercially successful and marked a continuation of the band’s alternative rock phase.

Throughout the early 2000s, Pyogenesis continued touring internationally, including performances in Europe and Russia. The band remained active until the mid-2000s before entering a period of reduced activity. In 2012, they reissued early material to mark its anniversary.

Pyogenesis resumed activity in 2014 and introduced a revised lineup including drummer Jan Räthje and guitarist Gizz Butt. Between 2015 and 2020, the band released a series of concept albums known as the "Steampunk Trilogy", consisting of "A Century in the Curse of Time", "A Kingdom to Disappear", and "A Silent Soul Screams Loud". These releases explored historical and thematic concepts related to societal change and were accompanied by international touring.
