Patrick is an musician based out of Richmond, VA. From a very early age, he has been writing music and playing for his family and friends, and anyone else who would listen. Over the years, Patrick has played in many bands ranging from indie rock to ambient electronic to improv jazz and hip-hop. Jumping from instrument to instrument, Patrick has always tried to keep things fresh and new. In 2009, he started his solo project, Patrick Bates.
By trade, Patrick is a live sound engineer and has been working in the music industry for over 8 years. Traveling the land from coast to coast and beyond, he takes his experience with him when working on music. "When creating a song, you need to find the purpose; be it a melody, a lyric, or even just a guitar riff or drum beat. Then all you need to do is build out the other instruments, sounds, and frequencies to reinforce this purpose." Spending literally thousands of nights behind the sound board making other musicians sound right, Patrick uses his unique perspective and knowledge when taking the stage himself.
In 2009, Patrick found himself in a recurring situation: he was in a band that couldn't grow, due to lack of motivation in fellow band mates. As this is something that has happened many times, Patrick decided to do something about it. While still busy with his work, any chance he had was spent in the basement working on new music for a solo project. After a year, he had written enough songs to start putting an album together. He has recently released his first EP, "Road Sans Map", containing three acoustic versions of songs that will be on his upcoming full length record.
