Patrick Ballard

Working with the medium of sound and the multitude of its cultural forms, Patrick Ballard strings together a broad range of influences to create sound works which are at once a work of music, and at further examination, inseparable from the artworks which parallel or weave through his entire oeuvre. With a tendency towards the theatricality of sound, music, and object-hood, his works, or the access of his works, are often involved closed processes or take multiple forms (ie. sound arranged through social networking, sound-based performance artworks, readings, etc.).
Ballard is a self-taught musician. His primary instrument is the piano, evoking stylistic elements of free-jazz and avant-garde composition from the latter half of the 20th century. Ranging from ambient, glitch, jazz, spoken word, gospel, opera, folk, post-punk, radio-talk, sketch comedy, and noise, Ballard's schizophrenic style seems at times to conjure a disembodied band of disparate musicians altogether. His mother is a music therapist.
