Knoll is an American experimental deathgrind band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 2017. The band describes its music as “macabre funeral grind,” combining death metal and grindcore with black metal influences, noise and unconventional instrumentation. According to the band, its name draws on an archaic term associated with the tolling of a funeral bell.
During Knoll’s early years, Jamie Eubanks performed both vocals and drums. After recording their debut album, several members relocated to the Nashville area, where Jack Anderson joined as drummer. By 2024, the band’s lineup comprised Eubanks, bassist Lukas Quartermaine, guitarists Ryan Cook and Cameron Giarraputo, and Anderson.
Their debut album, Interstice, was released on 26 February 2021, followed by Metempiric on 24 June 2022. Both records were recorded by Andy Nelson, mixed by Kurt Ballou and mastered by Brad Boatright. Their third album, As Spoken, was released on 26 January 2024.
As Spoken develops the band’s exploration of mourning customs, historical literature and the preservation and distortion of language. Its instrumentation includes trumpet and waterphone alongside guitars, percussion and electronics. Eubanks has described producing simultaneous vocal tones without layering, drawing on operatic approaches to projection and physical performance. The album was accompanied by analog films created for its tracks.
Knoll’s live presentation incorporates antique lamps, funeral drapery and theatrical lighting, extending the recorded work’s imagery into performance. The band operates independently, managing its own releases, merchandise and artistic presentation.
