Juli (German for "July") is a German alternative pop band from Giessen, Hesse. The band was formed in 2001 from the earlier group Sunnyglade and consists of singer Eva Briegel, guitarists Jonas Pfetzing and Simon Triebel, bassist Andreas "Dedi" Herde and drummer Marcel Römer.
The group originated in 1996 under the name Sunnyglade. The original line-up consisted of Andreas "Dedi" Herde, Martin Möller, Jonas Pfetzing, Marcel Römer and Simon Triebel, who also served as lead vocalist. Singer Miriam Adameit later joined the band. With this line-up, Sunnyglade recorded the album "Pictures of My Mind" in 1998. In 2000, Adameit and Möller left the group and were replaced by Eva Briegel and the returning Marcel Römer. During this period, the band performed songs in English and won the Hessischer Rockpreis in 2000 while placing second in the Deutscher Pop-Preis competition.
After signing with EMI in 2001 and beginning work with producer Lutz Fahrenkrog-Petersen, the group decided to switch to German-language songs. They abandoned the name Sunnyglade, discarded their earlier material and adopted the name Juli, inspired by a song by the Berlin band Tex. The first performances under the new name took place in 2002. In 2003, after several showcase appearances, the band signed a recording contract with Universal Music.
Juli released their debut single, "Perfekte Welle", in June 2004. The song reached number two on the German singles chart and received a gold certification. Following the Indian Ocean earthquake of December 2004, a number of radio and television stations temporarily removed the song from rotation because of concerns that its title and lyrics could be interpreted in relation to the disaster. The band and Universal Music expressed understanding for the decision. The song was later made available as downloadable content for the video game "Rock Band".
The debut album "Es ist Juli" was released in September 2004. It reached number two in Germany, number four in Austria and number seven in Switzerland. By 2006 it had sold more than one million copies and received quadruple platinum certification in Germany. Several singles were released from the album, including "Geile Zeit", which reached the German top 20.
In 2005, Juli represented Hesse in the Bundesvision Song Contest with "Geile Zeit" and won the competition with 159 points. The band also appeared at the Berlin edition of Live 8. Following tours across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, they undertook the "Es ist Juli" tour and performed at festivals and concerts throughout 2005. Additional singles released from the album included "Regen und Meer", "Warum" and "November". The video for "Regen und Meer" referenced the Red Army Faction and events associated with the German Autumn of 1977.
Work on the second studio album began in late 2005. The album, "Ein neuer Tag", was completed in 2006 and released in October of that year. Its lead single, "Dieses Leben", reached the top five of the German singles chart. The album achieved platinum status and sold strongly upon release. In 2006, Juli received the Bambi Award in the national music category and the Eins Live Krone award. Further singles from the album included "Wir Beide", "Zerrissen" and the title track. In 2007, the band performed at the German edition of Live Earth in Hamburg. That year, Eva Briegel and Chris Carrabba recorded a duet version of Dashboard Confessional's "Stolen". A live album and DVD, both titled "Ein neuer Tag - live", were released in September 2007.
Juli describe their musical style as alternative pop. Their songs have frequently received extensive radio airplay in Germany, with "Perfekte Welle", "Geile Zeit", "Regen und Meer" and "Dieses Leben" reaching high positions on German airplay charts.
After completing the tour for "Ein neuer Tag" in 2007, the band took a break from recording and performing. In September 2010, they released their third studio album, "In Love". The lead single, "Elektrisches Gefühl", reached number 12 in Germany, while the second single, "Immer wenn es dunkel wird", reached number 37.
In 2013, Juli announced work on a new album. The singles "Insel", "Jetzt" and "Eines Tages" were released in 2014. The fourth studio album, "Insel", was issued in October 2014 and reached number ten in Germany.
The single "Fahrrad" was released in April 2019. Subsequent activity was limited in part by the COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2021 and 2022, Universal Music released five digital EPs - "Nacht", "Da draußen", "Liebe", "Wanderlust" and "Retrovibes" - consisting of previously released material.
New singles, including "Fette wilde Jahre", "Der Sommer ist vorbei", "Gehen oder bleiben", "Wolke" and "Irgendwann", were released between 2022 and 2023. The band's fifth studio album, "Der Sommer ist vorbei", was released on 28 April 2023, more than eight years after its predecessor. A German tour followed in May 2023, although several concerts were postponed because of Eva Briegel's illness. The group also recorded a performance at the Bauhaus Dessau for the 3sat series "Pop Around @ Bauhaus". In September 2023, Eva Briegel, Simon Triebel and Jonas Pfetzing performed at a Fridays for Future rally in front of the Brandenburg Gate during the 13th Global Climate Strike.
