Jazzkantine

Jazzkantine is a German jazz rap band from Braunschweig. The group was founded in 1994 by Ole Sander, Matthias Lanzer and Christian Eitner. Their musical style combines elements of jazz, funk and rap, and they have collaborated with artists such as Smudo, Götz Alsmann and bands including Such a Surge.

In 1994, the band released its self-titled debut album "Jazzkantine" ("Jazz Canteen"), which led to a contract with BMG Hamburg and chart success. In 1996, the group received the Echo award in the category Best Jazz Production for this release. They also received the German Jazz Award and the Goldene Ohr. The album "Hell’s Kitchen" was later nominated for an Echo award.

Since 1994, Jazzkantine has performed more than 2,000 concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, including appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival. On 6 April 2002, the band performed a concert with the hr-Bigband under the direction of Jörg Achim Keller at the Kassel exhibition halls as part of the “hr3@night” event series. The group has also collaborated with the Staatstheater Braunschweig on several projects, including "Tanzzkantine" ("Dance Canteen"), "Braunschweich, Braunschweich!" , "Ölper 12 Pöints", "Ölper 12 Pöints – Die zweite Staffel" ("Ölper 12 Points – The Second Season"), "Ölper 12 Pöints – Die dritte Staffel" ("Ölper 12 Points – The Third Season"), "Unser Eintracht" ("Our Eintracht"), "DaDaDa" and "Hyper Hyper".

In 2008, the band released the album "Hell’s Kitchen", on which it reinterpreted hard rock songs in its characteristic style, featuring guest vocalists such as Xavier Naidoo, Max Mutzke, Tom Gaebel and Pat Appleton. The album reached number one on the iTunes jazz charts and later also topped the official German jazz charts in July 2008.

Since April 2011, the rhythm section of Jazzkantine has appeared in the theatre production "Fleisch ist mein Gemüse" ("Meat Is My Vegetable") at the Staatstheater Braunschweig under the name “Tiffanys”. Another project associated with the band is the Blauhausband, which performs several times a year at the same venue with both core members and guest musicians, including Roger Cicero, Dr. Ring-Ding, Sam Leigh-Brown and Tom Gaebel.

In December 2011, the band participated in the theatre production "Die Braunschweiger Weihnachtsgeschichte" ("The Brunswick Christmas Story"), created in collaboration with author and director Peter Schanz. In March 2012, Jazzkantine released the album "Jazzkantine spielt Volkslieder" ("Jazzkantine Plays Folk Songs") through Universal Music, featuring reinterpretations of traditional German folk songs combined with elements of hip-hop, reggae and soul. Guest contributors included Pat Appleton and Sam Leigh-Brown. From August to September 2012, the group continued its theatre collaboration with the production "Ö 3.0 – das Ölperium kehrt zurück" ("Ö 3.0 – The Ölperium Returns").

In September 2013, the album "Ultrahocherhitzt" was released, marking a stylistic return to the band’s earlier sound. Guest musicians included Joo Kraus, Nils Wogram and Nora Becker. In October 2014, Jazzkantine celebrated its 20th anniversary with a concert in cooperation with the NDR Bigband at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, alongside the release of the album "Ohne Stecker" ("Unplugged"). The album featured guest appearances by Smudo, Aleksey and Signore Rossi.

In September 2016, the band released its twelfth studio album "Old’s Cool", a concept album exploring the early history of hip-hop. The 2019 album "Mit Pauken und Trompeten" ("With Timpani and Trumpets") included the song "Eine Ehre" ("An Honour"), which summarises the band’s 25-year history. In October 2022, Jazzkantine released the album "Discotheque".
