The long-time dream of lead vocalist and guitarist Ted Calcagni, Hedgeway is a four-man group staged from the heart of Burlington, Vermont. The band, originally formed in October of 2006 under the name 'Axes and Shields', debued by covering Built to Spill with Jim Shields as lead vocalist.
The band itself is comprised of Calcagni, drummer Ben Edmonds, bass guitarist Chris Mahl and Evan Mickel, who is the band's second guitarist and vocalist.
'Hedgeway', a name created by Calcagni, alludes to the neighborhood where Calcagni, Edmonds and Mahl all grew up in South Burlington, VT. The name replaced 'Axes and Shields' when they first started rehearsing without Shields, who was dropped as Calcagni stepped up to become lead vocalist.
The band's sound reaches back to to the 1990's, emulating the trademarks of the decade; the melodic riffs of Built to Spill, the multi-faceted lyrics of Weezer and the guitar chomping chords of the Dismemberment Plan. Other notable influences include now-mainstream indie bands such as Modest Mouse.
The band's first full-length track, "Back to Reason", stands as their trademark song. As the first original that they played for the public, the track is also the first song they've recorded (with help from Calcagni's brother, who is one of the front men for The Tasty Habits).
Hedgeway is currently working on a debut 8-track album.
