Eye Single is a three piece project that is part rock, part metal and a little bit progressive. Its members have diverse backgrounds and styles, but come together in their love of progressive metal. They all are self-proclaimed Dream Theater fans, and although that influence might pop up on occasion, their music is definitely more mainstream. There are moments of drop-tuned or seven-string mayhem, but then there are moments where the listener gets to relax to some mellow grooves. The melodies are meant to be catchy, singable and relatable.
Thomas "Tandy" Whitaker is their classically trained vocalist, and spent his early years performing opera, choral and musical theater. He attended Brigham Young University and performed for two years with BYU's a Capella group, Vocal Point. Greg Ballard was also a college performer, playing in band, marching bands, orchestras, and various percussion ensembles. Paul Ferguson is your typical guitar junkie and has rotated in and out of various bands performing all kinds of rock on lots of dim, grungy stages. As long as it has ripping guitar in it, he'll play it.
Eye Single combines the many influences of its members into its compositions. The playing is clean, heartfelt and intentional. Although occasionally technical, the focus is on the melody. Each song seems to have some kind of "progressive-ish" twist to it, but it doesn't take over the music.
The album, "What Is A Man" loosely follows an unnamed character through his life. Each song touches on a different experience or a different phase of life. The songs start at the beginning, where he wonders where the human soul comes from, and take him to the end of his life, where he contemplates what might exist after death. The title track asks the question, "What kind of man will I be?" There are many views on what a man is or should be. We all frequently tend to be self-serving and negative. Occasionally there comes enlightenment. We recognize being more self-less elevates us all. In those moments we realize our true potential. All of us can help all of us do great things!
Eye Single caters to rock and metal fans, while at the same time, sends out a positive message to a world that needs it.
