The female trio “Ejypt” has created their own unique style of music. Ejypt distinctive sound is a compilation of R&B, Pop, Rock, Soul, Inspirational, and Hip Hop music. Ejypt finds their musical inspiration from artists such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Mary Mary, and TLC, just to name a few. Ejypt mission is to inspire the world through their exceptional sound and positive music. At an early age Sophia Gibson and her sister Katrina Gibson, also know to their friends as SoSo and Kat began singing at their Church, and soon after, in talent shows and local functions. Both sisters are known for their incredible talents and shared passion for music. SoSo began singing in her Church choir at the age of five and taught herself to play the piano by ear. SoSo adds an element of range to Ejypt not seen in today’s female groups. Katrina also began developing her musical talents at the age of 5. The girls’ parents kept them busy with musical instruments and karaoke machines. Their parents support was instrumental in helping the girls develop their musical talents. Kat’s voice is sultry, and lush giving Ejypt a richer, much stronger sound. In 1999, Sophia and Katrina formed a singing group with a childhood friend. The group competed in, and won several local talent shows and developed contacts within the music industry. Their biggest talent competition was the “Coca Cola True Talent Artist Search” in 2000. The group came in first place in the Philadelphia area and caught the attention of TLC band member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. Lisa befriended the group and took them under her wing; she even came up with the name “Ejypt” for the group. With Lisa’s support the group was soon offered a record deal with DreamWorks Records and it appeared that SoSo’s and Kat’s dreams were coming true. All of this took a heartbreaking turn when Lisa tragically passed away in 2002 from an automobile accident in Honduras. The girls had accompanied Lisa on her trip and also suffered injuries from the accident. SoSo and Kat never fully recovered from the emotional loss and decided to take some time off to heal physically and emotionally. The group stayed together for a short while following the loss, but eventually decided to pursue different interest. SoSo and Kat would eventual grow stronger and continue to work towards realizing their dreams. In 2009 SoSo and Kat reemerged on the scene with solo artist and childhood friend Shirley Joanis (Smiley) to reform the group “Ejypt”. Like SoSo and Kat, Smiley started singing at an early age. Smiley was born in Brooklyn, NY, but grew up in Philadelphia. Smiley also started out singing in Church, school functions, and talent shows. Smiley credits include coming in third place at the "Miss Black Penn State Pageant”. She also made top 20 in New York in Sean "P. Diddy” Combs “Making the Band Season 3” competition. Smiley also gained recognition on “Oprah Winfrey's Talent Search 2004.” Smiley’s explosive voice adds an element of surprise to the trio, giving the group the final piece to their distinctive sound. Since the reformation of “Ejypt” SoSo, Kat and Smiley have been working hard to regain exposure and show off their talents, as well as working on their first demo. Together “Ejypt” plays their own instruments, produces and arrange their own music, and writes their own songs. With all this talent the group has had the good fortune of working with some of Philadelphia’s most talented producers, sound engineers, and artists. Be on the lookout for Ejypt!
