Crayon Pop (Hangul: 크레용팝) was a five-member South Korean girl group formed under Chrome Entertainment in 2012. The members consisted of Geummi (금미), Ellin (엘린), Choa (초아), Way (웨이) and Soyul (소율). The group have been on an indefinite hiatus since 2016.
Originally named Hurricane Pop, the group released their pre-debut track Bing Bing in early 2012. Back then the group featured member Serang instead of Way. Despite being invited to the initial auditions, Way was unable to audition for the group due to being in the indie band - N.Dolphin. However Serang left the group in May 2012 to pursue an acting career and Way was given another chance to join the group. She succeeded and as a result, she left N.Dolphin. Shortly before their debut the group's name was changed to Crayon Pop, as Chrome Entertainment thought the name Hurricane Pop would be insensitive in light of Japan's tsunamis.
On July 2012, the group debuted with the single Saturday Night from their debut EP Crayon Pop 1st Mini Album. Their debut did not receive much attention and their album was not commercially successful. Chrome Entertainment's CEO later revealed that the album had depleted all the company's money.
On October 24 2012, the group released their 1st single album Dancing Queen and the single Dancing Queen. As part of the promotion, they took to the streets and promoted with guerrilla performances. This was done due to limited opportunities to promote on the music shows - as a result of the company's financial situation and the group's 'nugu' status.
The group did some mini-concert promotions in Japan in early 2013. On June 20 2013, the group released their breakthrough hit Bar Bar Bar from their 2nd single album Bar Bar Bar. The video featured choreographed jumping, and they wore scooter helmets, polo shirts, and tracksuit pants with skirts. The track topped various real time music charts in Korea and the Billboard's Korea K-Pop Hot 100. They won their first music show win on Music Bank on August 30.
On September 26 2013, the group released their third single album The Streets Go Disco under the Sony Music label. The album featured four previous singles and remixes of those songs. A music video for the title track, "Dancing Queen 2.0", was released along with the album.
At the end of 2013, they received their first major award, Best New Female Artist at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. They also won Hot Trend Award at the MelOn Music Awards, Artist of the Year on KBS Song Festival, New Rising Star at the Golden Disk Awards, the New Artist Award at the Seoul Music Awards and the Hot Trend Award at the Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards.
On November 26, 2013, they released a Christmas single, "Lonely Christmas" from their third single album Lonely Christmas.
On February 5, 2014, Crayon Pop and rock singer Kim Jang-hoon released "Hero" for the Korea Firefighters Project.
On April 1, 2014, they released Uh-ee from their 4th single album Uh-ee.
On June 20 2014, Crayon Pop released their first soundtrack single, "Hey Mister", for the television drama "Trot Lovers". On 26 September, Crayon Pop released their second soundtrack single "C'mon C'mon" for the TV series High "School: Love On", which Choa made her acting debut on.
On January 22 2015, the group released a song for Chinese New Year, "123 Happy New Year", in collaboration with Chinese boy group, DT Boys.
On March 27 2015, the group released their 2nd EP FM and title track FM.
On May 4 2015, the group released the single "Sup (Wassup)", which features French TV personality Robin Deiana. The single was part 11 in the Artist Diary Project.
On July 22 2015, the group's first Japanese single, titled "Rarirure" (ラリルレ), was released. The song debuted at #25 on the Oricon Charts. A second Japanese single, "Dancing All Night", was released on November 18 and debuted at #17.
On January 20 2016, they released their first studio album, CRAYON POP, in Japan, which features all their Japanese singles and Japanese versions of their Korean songs.
On August 24 2016, Crayon Pop was featured on Mexican boy band CD9's single "Get Dumb".
On September 9 2016, they released the single Vroom Vroom and soon after, on September 26, released their first Korean studio album Evolution Pop Vol.1 , with the lead single Doo Doom Chit.
In March of 2017, the contract with Chrome Entertainment finished for four members of the group (GeumMi, Ellin, ChoA and Soyul) and they announced this in April 2017. Way's contract finished in May of the same year.
On May 31 2017, an announcement was made that Geummi, Ellin, Choa and Way signed a non-exclusive contract under Chrome Entertainment to promote as Crayon Pop, however their solo careers would be managed by other labels. The statement specified that the group would be on a hiatus while the members worked on their solo careers.
Soyul chose to leave the group to focus on her (then very recent - February 2017) marriage to Moon Heejun (of the group H.O.T) and new family.
