Code Indigo

Code Indigo is a UK electronic/ambient group that started back in 1995. It was put together by David Wright and Robert Fox, who both play keyboards and write most of the music. At the beginning they also had Nik Smith on guitar and Vaughn Evans on synths. Over time the lineup changed, Pat Patterson and later Andy Lobban took over on guitar, and Evans left in 1998.

Their music doesn’t really sit in one box. It mixes electronic, ambient and instrumental rock stuff, sometimes with chill-out or experimental touches. They can be compared to Art of Noise, Enigma or the instrumental side of Pink Floyd. Some of their tracks sound like something you’d hear in a sci-fi movie or a Blade Runner-type soundtrack, lots of atmosphere, guitars and synth layers, and some use of samples and rhythms.

They’ve put out several concept-style albums, like For Whom the Bell (1996), Uforia (2002) and TimeCode (2010), most of them on the AD Music label, which David Wright helped set up. They’ve also played live at electronic music events around Europe, like the E-Live festivals and shows at places like Jodrell Bank.

Code Indigo works more like a long-term project than a traditional group, with people coming in and out depending on the album. Fans of electronic and ambient music usually mention them because they blend different styles and don’t always follow the usual genre rules.

The band includes:

David Wright – keyboards
Robert Fox – keyboards
Andy Lobban – lead guitar
Dave Massey – programming and production
Nigel Turner-Heffer – keyboards, bass and rhythm guitar
