1. Avernus formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1992. Influenced by artists such as Paradise Lost, Dead Can Dance and Cranes, early releases were a mix of death metal, doom metal, and cinematic atmospheres, though the band's sound soon evolved to incorporate a sound closer to goth rock and has managed to record semi-consistently despite an ever-fluctuating roster of musicians.
