Leipzig-based trio WFST was formed in 2013 as the musical project of three friends from a rural area in Germany. Being comprised of a formally trained guitarist, pianist and drummer, the group initially composed long-form instrumentals distilled from countless jam sessions in a mostly analog setup. Simultaneously, each member developed skills in music production and started injecting the project with their own unique approach.

WFST crafts ornate and vibrant tapestries of sound by enriching samples with recorded elements and often blurring the lines between the two. The group's musical approach is deliberately detached from typical band dynamics so that no member has a fixed role or responsibility limited to their instrument. Instead, their music is better understood as a process of layering textures and atmospheres, with the development of ideas unfolding in unpredictable ways rather than following a predefined formula. Extensive and imaginative use of obscure samples form the core of WFST's creative process. Similar to Plunderphonics or Musique concrète, found sounds, spoken word, as well as instrumental and vocal samples sourced from all decades of recorded music provide the building blocks of their sonic palette. Like puzzle pieces, samples are rearranged, layered and put into dialogue with each other to give them new meaning while still forming a cohesive whole lyrically.
