Simon Swerwer is an Afrikaans acoustic guitarist, vocalist and blues harp player. Like many solo musicians, he writes his own lyrics and music. Also like many musicians, Bob Dylan was quite simply his greatest inspiration to start composing. Through Dylan he was introduced to other folk musicians like Woody Guthrie and Joan Baez. An obsession with the music of the original Blues masters (Robert Johnson, Skip James) was only a short step away. While these dusty genres have defined Simon’s musical style, they are often contrasted with the content of unconventional lyrics.
Simon began performing in Stellenbosch (South Africa) in 2006. Since then, he has performed at the legendary Dorpstraat Theatre (2009), on the Afrikaans radio station RSG (2009), and the Raka Unplugged Festival (2011) near Swellendam. At the moment he is in the Netherlands obtaining a master’s degree in English Literary Studies. As a student of ancient and modern languages, Simon writes about the old and the new, about fleeing as well as finally coming home.
