Oursilence

Oursilence was a name connected to small acoustic-driven project started in 2006 by Jay (Vocals/Acoustic) and Wihan (Drums); the music was very run-of-the-mill and admittedly bland. As it happens with any venture the project evolved in time to take on a new identity.

The actual timeline and logistics of this metamorphosis is as broad and complicated as a bottomless ocean but it has produced us with the Oursilence we have today. From the two-piece they have now grown to a 5 piece spectacular! The music is loosely classified as Neo-Prog Art-Rock with Commercial Tendencies. This might be a rather smug tongue-in-cheek classification, but it is easily understood when first listening to a few tracks.

The whole of the sound is stronger than all of its components combined. Making use of the classic prog formula as basis for the compositions, keeps things interesting and ensures that the music never gets stale.

The hallmark of the new sound, is Jono's aggressive staccato electric rhythm protruding from the song like thorns from a bush with Zane's epic guitar solos echoing from a galaxy far… far… away. The drums march across all of the tracks with unparalleled precision giving you the feeling of being on the receiving end of a military onslaught just before dragging you in and ensnaring you with its quiet complexity. Megan's pounding bass lines ooze all over the low end, getting your heart throbbing, and before you can even help yourself you will be trapped. The vocals take their cue from the mood of the song, and presents it to the commercial listener in an interesting fashion, the vocal sound cannot be pigeonholed as it spans from bass to high falsetto, sometimes within the same song. The final touch will have to be the sometimes 80’s pop/dance synth pushing this massive sound even higher up into the atmosphere.

This time round, however, the band did extensive testing on the material before hitting the studio. The songs were put through their paces in rehearsals and on stage to ensure absolutecohesiveness. Admittedly this was one of their biggest mistakes they made with the previous album. " We hope to produce a more concise and well rounded sound by paying close attention to the final sound, rather than putting all of our energy into our own individual tasks."

Although the sound of the band was not crafted to fit into any genre, it has great appeal to musician and the commercial listener alike.

The band's newest project is currently in the works, and this album promises to be a journey from start to end. Oursilence has taken on a rather popular work ethic (within the progressive genre) of creating a concept album, following a single story throughout this collection of songs.

From humble, toned down beginnings, Oursilence is ready to give the industry a much needed wake up call. Art rock is here to stay.
