KOKIA (Akiko Yoshida) (born July 22, 1976) is a Japanese singer-songwriter whose music blends folk, world, and new age influences. Renowned for her clear, emotive voice and spiritually infused lyricism, she writes, composes, and produces most of her own work, weaving recurring themes of love, faith, and human connection.
Trained in classical opera at Toho Gakuen School of Music, she debuted in 1998 with Songbird. Her early single “Arigatō...” became a hit in Hong Kong after being covered by Sammi Cheng, while “The Power of Smile” (2003) brought national acclaim in Japan. These releases established her as a crossover artist capable of bridging pop melody with a global and introspective sound.
KOKIA’s career spans more than two decades and over a dozen albums, including Trip Trip (2002), Remember Me (2003), Uta ga Chikara (2004), The Voice (2008), REAL WORLD (2010), Moment (2011), Where to go my love? (2013), I Found You (2015), and Tokyo Mermaid (2018). Her work frequently appears in anime and game soundtracks, including “Ai no Melody / Chōwa Oto (With Reflection)” (Origin: Spirits of the Past), “Follow the Nightingale” (Tales of Innocence), and “Tatta Hitotsu no Omoi” (Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino).
In 2006, she founded her own company Anco & Co., gaining full creative control over her music. Since then she has continued to self-produce and release her work through this imprint, collaborating with Paris-based Wasabi Records for European distribution. Her independent albums — including Fairy Dance (2008), REAL WORLD (2010), and Tokyo Mermaid (2018) — highlight her cosmopolitan sensibility and interest in blending classical, Celtic, and ambient textures. In 2023, she celebrated her 25th anniversary with The Lighthouse vol. 2, reaffirming her enduring presence as both artist and producer.
Beyond music, KOKIA is active in humanitarian and charitable efforts, performing at benefit concerts and creating music in support of disaster relief and peace initiatives. Her songs often function as modern prayers — reflections on empathy, resilience, and the sacredness of everyday life.
With a luminous voice and a catalogue that transcends language and genre, KOKIA remains one of Japan’s most distinctive modern singer-songwriters, uniting spiritual warmth with universal melody.
