Artist Detailed Info: John Stuart Mill

Info auf deutsch

John Stuart Mill

John Stuart Mill, aside from being a philosopher's name, is the name for two different artist: an Estonian alternative rock-and and the moniker of John Schmersal's (ex-Brainiac currently of Enon) solo project. His first and only release under the name, 1997's "Forget Everything" is an underrated lofi masterpiece. Everything you'd expect from a man whose band ended tragically in the death of a member.Timeliness being a factor in naming your band,

John Stuart Mill the Estonian rock band started playing in January 2005. Although the band has currently it's 13th (!) line-up the two core members have been the same from the beginning - Matt Samuel Berlioz (vocals) and Albert Marginal (guitarr). That's ofcource if you don't count John Stuart Mill himself who has been an ispirational figure for the band (hence the name).

John Stuart Mill has taken it upon itself to promote DIY culture and break free from stereotypes and cliches. Not to do what's popular but to do what the band members like themselves, what they find interesting.

The first single was recorded in now former member Holger "Volk" Peterson's garage in a self-made studio. This fact demonstrates very well the spirit of the band and deliberate slipshoddiness in their music and performance in general.

The band has become (with great help from it's members and friends) somewhat legendary. It's a whole new entity all by itself. One element of that is for example the very glamorous pseudonyms for all the members and other people related to the band (Heinrich le Coq, Frank Costello, Oliviere St Obérg just give few examples).

The current line-up is as follows:
Matt S. Berlioz – vocals
Albert Marginal – guitarr
Mary McBarkley - bass
Erich Schmidt - drumms
John Stuart Mill - ideas
