Frontierer

Frontierer is a Scottish-American mathcore band operating between Edinburgh, Scotland, and St. Louis, Missouri. Its lineup consists of vocalist Chad Kapper, guitarists Pedram Valiani and Dan Stevenson, bassist Iain Macleod and drummer Luke Coursey. The band describes its music as “Transatlantic Noise Terror.”

Frontierer began as a remote collaboration between Valiani and Kapper, exchanging instrumental recordings and vocal ideas online. Their debut EP, The Collapse, appeared in 2013, followed by the album Orange Mathematics in October 2015. The album subsequently placed fourteenth in Rolling Stone’s list of the best metal albums of 2016.

The project expanded into a live band, making its concert debut at UK Tech-Fest in 2016. Valiani remained responsible for much of the writing and recording, with the musicians adapting the densely constructed material for performance. Abrupt rhythmic changes, heavily distorted guitars and electronic processing are central to the band’s sound.

Unloved followed in 2018, and Oxidized in 2021. The latter features guest appearances by Grady Avenell of Will Haven and Kevin McCaughey of Ion Dissonance.

On December 20, 2024, Frontierer released the four-track EP THE SKULL BURNED WEARING HELL LIKE A LIFE VEST AS THE NIGHT WEPT. Its title joins the names of its four songs, which share a narrative developed by Kapper. The band revisited its debut album for its tenth anniversary with Orange Mathematics (Redux), released on October 31, 2025. Valiani remixed the original recordings, which were remastered by Brad Boatright.

Frontierer’s fourth album, Ultraviolet Parasite, is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026. Its credits list both Kapper and Valiani for vocals and lyrics, with an additional performance by Tony Wolski of The Armed on “Ions & Oxygen Rockets.”
