3) One could argue that this six-piece band IS the 9 p.m. mass at the century-old St. Ignatius Church on Stafford Street and Jessie Avenue in Winnipeg. It dates back to 1970, when Rita Doerr, then a 14-year-old St. Mary's Academy student, was asked by former parish priest Elmer MacGillivray to sing with a guitarist and drummer at a contemporary-style mass on Sunday evenings.

What started as an experiment in worship has become a four-decade-long tradition, as Doerr and the band now called Discernment have until recently maintained a weekly presence at the 9 p.m. mass. They are set to retire at the end of June, 2013.
