John Hidalgo earned the BA in music at Tulane University and the MA in music composition at California State University, East Bay. His first orchestral work, 'Song for O’Carolan,' was runner-up in the 2003 Foundation Orchestra Association’s composition competition; his first work as a graduate student at CSUEB, 'Lingua Franca Variations,' was premiered at the 2005 Glenn Glasow Memorial Concert; his three settings of traditional carols were commissioned and premiered by the Menlo Park Chorus in 2006.
