
Jacques Cordier dit Bocan (c. 1580. - 1653.) was a French choreographer, dancer and omposr who contributed to Jacobean and Caroline masque. He was a celebrity in Europe, undoubtedly the most brilliant violinist of his age, who wrote numerous ballet scores, and one of his dances, "La Bocanne", was hugely popular. His nickname refers to an area in Picardy promised to him by the Duke of Montpensier. Marin Mersenne's Harmonie Universelle (1636) reproduced a tune attributed to him La Bocanne. [read more...]
